What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment or RCT is a procedure in which the blood vessels and nerves (that's the pulp) occupying the root section of the tooth are removed. The root canals are then shaped and then filled to seal off the root canal at both ends.

Root Canal is generally followed by a cap or crown to protect the teeth. The root canal-treated teeth are devoid of pulp i.e they're non-vital and therefore are brittle and more prone to fracture.

In which conditions RCT may be suggested?

A case where we find that toothache is associated with carries or swelling may be suggested for a RCT. However, at Smilekraft Dental Clinic in Nagpur we carefully examine you, take X-rays and based on our experience suggest if your tooth can be saved with Root Canal Treatment or needs any other treatment.

Some common symptoms where RCT may be suggested are as follows:

1. Deep cavity or black spot on tooth which you can see and the tooth hurts when you bite down on it, touch it or push on it.

2. Severe sensitivity to heat or cold for more than a few seconds

3. Swelling near the tooth

4. Tooth discoloration or appears black (whether it hurts or not)

5. Broken or fractured tooth.

When is Root Canal Treatment necessary?

The aim of root canal treatment is saving the damaged tooth by removing the infected or affected pulp and treating any infection. In case root canal treatment is not done, an infected tooth may have to be removed. If you ignore an infected or injured tooth the infection may spread to other parts of your body and cause more harm. Also, it is better to keep your natural teeth if you can, for as long as you can.
